because the last thing you want to do is get your party on before your divorce is final (particularly if your celebration could somehow affect your split).

Should You Throw a Divorce Party?

The idea of a party to celebrate your divorce—or conscious uncoupling, as some celebrities call it—is relatively new.

The fact is that you’re married and about to become single. Whether that’s cause for celebration is up to you, but you need to know that having a divorce party (while it may be fun) could actually spell d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r for you… and if you have them, your children, as well.

Some people go all-out and have divorce parties with their exes present. (Seems a bit awkward, but if that’s where you’re at in life, go for it!)

However, here’s what you need to keep in mind if you’re planning a big bash to celebrate your newfound single status:

  • Your children may not understand what there is to celebrate, especially if you’re posting pictures on social media that they can see and you haven’t explained your version of “closure” to them.
  • Your family members and friends may think that you’re going too far or that you’re acting inappropriately in light of the fact that—well, that you’re going through (or have just gone through) a divorce.

If you still feel that throwing a divorce party is what you need, provided that you’ve thought it through and your kids, your ex, or anyone else you care about won’t be affected, at least get a killer cake.
