How to Cope With Divorce When You Have a Baby or Toddler

The first thing you should do is get in touch with a Milwaukee divorce lawyer. Knowing you have caring, compassionate and tough legal representation in your corner can make a huge difference in the amount of stress you have to deal with.

For most people, having a strong support network in place can be tremendously helpful. If you don’t have a solid support network, though, you can take advantage of support groups or talk to a licensed counselor or therapist who’s trained in helping people through difficult situations like yours.

Aside from having outside help, here’s what you can do to take care of yourself:

  • Try to get adequate sleep. Just like doctors advise you when you have a newborn, it’s important to get all the rest you can. Your brain can’t function at 100 percent if you’re not getting enough sleep, and you really need to operate at your best right now.
  • Exercise as much as you can. Although exercise releases endorphins, which make you feel better, there are plenty of other reasons to make sure you’re moving around enough. It can even help you keep your mind clear to make those important decisions you need to make for your (and your child’s) future.
  • Try to practice relaxation techniques. Breathing exercises, guided imagery and even mindfulness meditation can be remarkably helpful during divorce – and even more so when you have a baby or toddler to care for.
  • Communicate as best you can with your child’s other parent. While it may be the last thing you want to do, the way you act toward your ex now sets the tone for the rest of your relationship – and with a baby or toddler, you still have a long way to go before you can forget about each other.
