Do You Qualify for Naturalization?

Not everyone qualifies for naturalization as a U.S. citizen. (The process is different for U.S. military personnel than it is for everyone else, so talk to your immigration attorney if that’s your situation.)

You may qualify for naturalization if you:

  • Have been a permanent resident in the U.S. for at least five years and you meet all other eligibility requirements
  • Have been a permanent resident for three years or more and you meet all eligibility requirements to file as the spouse of a U.S. citizen
  • Have qualifying service in the U.S. armed forces and meet all other eligibility requirements

You may also qualify if you’re the child of a U.S. citizen but you were born outside the U.S., residing outside the U.S., and meet all other eligibility requirements.

There are other paths to naturalization, so even if you don’t see your situation listed here, you may still qualify. For most people, it’s best to call an immigration attorney who understands all the pathways and who can find the best route to citizenship.
