Divorce-Related Depression: Signs and Symptoms

Only a medical professional can diagnose you with depression, but symptoms like these, are strong indicators that you may be suffering from it:

  • Continuous sadness, irritability or anger
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Abnormal tiredness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Feelings of helplessness
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Low self-esteem
  • Feelings of guilt and worthlessness

Every person is different, so you may exhibit all, some or only a few of these symptoms if you’re suffering from divorce-related depression.

Depression is different from the ordinary sadness or “having the blues.” Generally, in order to be diagnosed with depression, someone must exhibit symptoms like these for more days than not over a two-week period.

Depression Doesn’t Discriminate

It doesn’t matter how old you are, what gender you are or what ethnic group you identify with; depression can affect anyone. Kids can also suffer from divorce-related depression, which is a bona fide medical issue.

Getting Help for Divorce-Related Depression

Your Milwaukee family law attorney may be able to refer you to a local counselor who has helped other divorcés in situations like yours, and don’t worry – asking your lawyer for a referral is completely confidential.
