It may be painful, but suppressing these feelings will only prolong your grieving process and prevent you from moving on.
You’ll have plenty of emotional difficulties as you work through this transition. When positive feelings such as relief and hope come to the surface, embrace and celebrate them. These moments will help you cope with the negative emotions as they roll in.
Keep your eyes on the prize.
Remember, your end goal is moving on. Expressing your feelings will help, but be careful not to dwell on the negative. Focus on the positive. The past is behind you; you can and will get through this.
Reach out to people who care about you.
Whenever possible, surround yourself with people who value and support you. It’s important that you have the opportunity to be honest with yourself and those around you as you work through your emotions during and after a divorce. Spend your time with people who allow you that freedom without judging or criticizing you.
Cultivate new interests and friendships.
Divorce is a new beginning, as much as an end to your old relationship. Take this opportunity to explore new activities, perhaps an interest your ex didn’t share. Cultivate new friendships with people who share your interests. Get involved in a new community – take a class or volunteer your time.
Get outside help if you need it
If depression takes hold of you and the dark moments outweigh the hope, there are resources available to help you through this transition. Consider seeing a counselor or joining a support group. It’s vitally important for you to have a place to go where you feel comfortable opening up completely. You need, and deserve, a no-judgment-zone retreat where you can say whatever you need to say and express your emotions.
