3 Tips for Decompressing During Divorce

As experienced Milwaukee divorce attorneys, we’ve seen people at all kinds of stress levels coming into our offices. We’ve picked up a few things along the way, and we’ve uncovered three hot tips for decompressing during divorce that might work for you.

Decompressing During Divorce: Out with the Bad, in with the Good

Lots of people take solace in alcohol, tobacco or illicit drugs (don’t even get us started on the illicit drugs… but if you’re facing legal trouble over drugs, we can help). Unfortunately, divorce is the worst time for these things! Your body needs to be strong, healthy and resilient so that you can think on your feet and make the best decisions for you and your family. Ditch whatever “bad habits” you can and pick up a few good ones instead:

Talking Things Out

Most people find it extremely helpful to talk to a counselor or therapist during a divorce. There’s just something about getting things off your chest in a non-judgmental, non-threatening environment. If you think therapy or counseling might be for you, talk to your Milwaukee divorce lawyer – he or she might be able to refer you to a local professional with a great reputation.

Slow Down

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the Romans were some pretty industrious people. If you can’t get to everything, you just can’t get to everything (and there’s no law that says dishes have to be done, all of the laundry has to be folded or your car has to be washed – trust us). Prioritizing where you spend your time will go a long way toward easing the stress you’re experiencing.

Divorce is stressful – there’s no getting around it. If you’re in the middle of a divorce, you’re probably desperate for a way to decompress. Even if you don’t realize it (and even if you’re relieved or glad to be getting a divorce), the unavoidable stress of divorce is taking a toll on you. You’re juggling meetings with your Milwaukee divorce lawyer, shuttling kids back and forth to school, extracurricular activities and your ex’s house, and handling all of the day-to-day aspects of your life… so what are you supposed to do?
Yoga. If you can carve out an hour a week to work on stretching, clearing your mind and being in-tune with your body, do. You don’t even have to take a class; there are plenty of great tutorials on the Internet.
Getting to know the “old” you. While you were married, you probably let go of some of your favorite pastimes. Whether you used to be an avid reader, a jogger or a movie buff, start getting back into what you used to enjoy. Even better, try something entirely new.
